Kids In Boats
By Don Mueggenborg
Kids. Boats. Experienced paddlers. Good combination.
Several years ago, the St Charles Canoe Club was asked to help out at the first Kids in Boats sponsored by the Aurora Township. Betsy Bellario, a member of the St Charles Club, had worked with the township as a way to work with young boys and girls. Boats were provided by Rocktown adventures , all we had to do was show up and help kids learn to paddle.
None of the kids had ever been in a canoe or kayak, maybe never even seen one. I am sure that many did not know how to swim. But, most kids love to try things. We told them how to put on a PFD and how to hold and use a paddle. Then into the boats. Some were skeptical but soon got the hang of it. A few could not get to shore quick enough.
At least one little girl was afraid of the alligators. Others could not get enough paddling. SMILES more smiles and laughter.
The day ended too quickly. Kids got a new experience. Adults who helped had a good time.
This year’s event was June 15 at Mastodon Lake, Phillips Park in Aurora. There were over 50 kids and 15 canoe club volunteers who took turns paddling the canoes and kayaks with the kids.
I was wondering why the line did not seem to get fewer then realized they paddled, got out of the boat, got back in line. And did it again and again
It was a beautiful day weather wise and a good time was had by all.
