IPC Mid-Season Update – June 2025

By Anthea Halpryn

We’re about halfway through the Illinois Paddling Council (IPC) racing season—and it’s only mid-June!

So far, we’ve completed three races: the Current Buster, the Des Plaines Canoe and Kayak Marathon, and the Voyageur Landing Race, which took place this past Father’s Day.

This season has been defined by exceptionally low water levels, presenting a significant challenge to paddlers across all events. The Des Plaines Marathon reported the lowest water levels in its history, resulting in finishing times that were, on average, 30 minutes to 2 hours longer than usual. Remarkably, only one boat did not finish (DNF), a true testament to the perseverance and determination of the 346 boats that finished.

The start line was ripe with positive energy and eager anticipation. Loudspeakers could be heard up and down the starting line telling racers to “Go to the ready line” then “Go to the start line.” The finish line had a wonderful live band (Andrew Saint and Mike Hawksworth), food truck, tabletop exhibits from the IPC, St. Charles Canoe Club, and the Cook County Forest Preserve, and more. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary offered free boat inspections.

The Voyageur Landing Race was a standout event this year—not only due to the conditions but because, for the first time in recent memory, the top finishers were all parent/child teams:

  • 1st Place Overall (C2): Dave and Caleb (19)
  • 2nd Place Overall (K2): Jennifer and Colton (age 10)
  • 3rd Place Overall (K2): Brian and Oliver (age 10)

It has been truly inspiring to see such strong youth participation this season, and we look forward to continuing this trend in the remaining races.

To be eligible for the IPC Paddler of the Year (male or female), paddlers must compete in at least four races during the season. Haven’t raced yet? Good news—there are still four races remaining, and you can still qualify!

Upcoming 2025 Races:

Race standings will be updated following the completion of the fourth event. Stay tuned for results—and we’ll see you on the water!
